Seismic Upgrading

In 1990 the district carried out a Stage 1 seismic risk assessment of all the schools. This was mainly a visual review of the building type and condition, and a numerical Seismic Assessment Index was assigned to each building. The Seismic Assessment Index gives an approximate assessment of the ability of a building to withstand an earthquake without collapsing. The schools were then categorized as High, Medium and Low Risk buildings.

Status of Structural Seismic Upgrading Program
After the completion of the replacement of Steveston Secondary School in 2006, all high risks buildings will have either been replaced or upgraded under the Capital Plan.
Non-structural Seismic Remediation Program
Non-structural Seismic Remediation is the securing of the contents of a building and building equipment, such that they will not cause injury during an earthquake and will subsequently be less expensive to repair.

The provincial government Seismic Mitigation Branch carried out an assessment of all the schools in 2001, and entered all the items requiring remediation into a data base called the SMARTS program. The Ministry of Education continues to provide funding to support these programs.
