On Thursday, November 7, an incident occurred at McRoberts Secondary School during which a student required transportation to the hospital. In normal circumstances, the parent or guardian would be notified, however in this case, due to confusion between the Richmond RCMP and school personnel, the parents were not notified. This, understandably, caused significant concern to the parents who should have been notified. An apology has been provided directly to the parents by the School District.
As Superintendent of Schools, I have received a number of communications from concerned members of the community. While I am not able to respond to each person individually, I acknowledge and understand the concerns expressed. Circumstances relating to an individual student cannot be discussed publicly and therefore no further information regarding this matter will be released by the School District. In order to ensure that a situation like this does not occur again, the School District will be taking steps to ensure that expectations regarding communication with parents in similar circumstances are clear to all school administrators. In addition, communication protocols with the Richmond RCMP will also be reviewed in order to avoid future confusion.
Richmond RCMP are conducting the investigation regarding allegations made by the student and will be communicating directly with the family of the student when their investigation has concluded. The School District will be relying on the results of that investigation to determine what occurs in terms of follow up regarding the allegations made.
