Tonight's (June 13) public meeting of the Board will be divided into two sections. The first section will be from 7:00-8:00 p.m., during which several groups of students will be presenting their learning and experiences on a variety of topics to the trustees. This part of the meeting will only be open to these students and their family members due to the capacity restrictions of the board room. The business portion of the agenda will begin at 8 p.m. and will be open to members of the public. Due to capacity restrictions, only the first 125 members of the public to arrive will be allowed into the Board room. All others will be asked to remain in the lobby during the meeting. Entrance tickets will be handed out at the south entrance to the School Board Office starting at 6:30 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.
Please note that tonight's agenda item on the Draft Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Policy (SOGI) contains only a Notice of Motion. The purpose of a Notice of Motion is to ensure that members of the community have an opportunity to know in advance what topics will appear on an upcoming public Board agenda. Trustees will not be discussing or voting on the proposed SOGI policy during tonight's meeting. As such, Richmond residents who are interested in attending the Board meeting to hear the discussion on the Draft SOGI Policy are encouraged to attend the June 27, 2018 Public Meeting of the Board of Education which will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Burnett Secondary School located at 5011 Granville Ave., Richmond. .
The June 27th public Board meeting agenda includes a Recommendation to Approve the Draft SOGI Policy. A Recommendation to Approve, which indicates that the Board has examined an item in question and is ready to make a decision as to whether to approve the proposed policy. The Board of Education has allotted two hours of time to hear from the public at this meeting and Richmond residents who would like to provide a short comment will be provided up to two minutes of time to do so. A time restriction of up to two minutes for comments has been put in place to allow for the highest number of people to be able to speak.
A sign-up list for those wishing to provide a comment during the June 27th meeting will be posted online and will become available for sign-up starting at 4:30 pm on Monday, June 25th. Please note that all speakers must be Richmond residents and will be required to provide proof of Richmond residency with photo identification at the beginning of the meeting.
